When your gums become irritated, swollen, or bleeding which may be noticed during brushing and flossing, it can be a sign of early periodontal (or gum) disease called gingivitis. If left unmanaged further damage to the gums and teeth can occur, which is what is referred to as Periodontal Disease. Periodontitis is dangerous as it starts in the soft tissues of the gums and can spread impacting the teeth, their roots, the jawbone and potentially internal vital systems! The dentists and hygienists at Living Wellness Dental can help identify signs of periodontal disease during your dental visit.

With early intervention, you can reverse gum disease with a consistent home-based oral hygiene routine, frequent dental cleanings (every 6 months), annual dental exams (at minimum), and an assortment of natural remedies.

Symptoms of Periodontal Disease

You may not be aware, but almost half of adults age 30 years and over suffer from some form of periodontal disease. It is more common in men than in women, and the risks of experiencing periodontal disease increase with age.

You may be developing a form of periodontal disease if you experience symptoms such as:

  • Red, irritated, or inflamed/swollen gums
  • Discoloured plaque or tartar buildup
  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • Tooth sensitivity or gum pain
  • Bad breath or halitosis
  • Receding gums
  • Metallic taste
  • Gum abscesses
  • Loose or missing teeth

In most cases, these symptoms result from oral neglect as harmful bacteria stick to the teeth and gums. Anyone can develop periodontal disease, and left unchecked, it can have devastating effects on teeth, bones and our internal health. Taking preventative measures and quick action when you notice symptoms can help protect you from discomfort and deteriorating health.

Periodontal Disease Prevention & Treatment

Preventative measures can help you avoid developing periodontal disease entirely. If you or the dental team at Living Wellness Dental detect early symptoms of gum disease, you should initially adjust your oral care routine to target any plaque buildup before it becomes hardened and sticky tartar. Your first line of defence should include a few changes to your lifestyle habits, including:

  • Brushing at least twice a day with toothpaste containing hydroxyapatite and using a soft-bristle brush for sensitive gums;
  • Flossing and using soft interdental brushes for hard-to-reach parts of your mouth once a day (your hygienist will have these available for you at your next visit);
  • Replacing your toothbrush every 3 months;
  • Limiting sugar, alcohol, and tobacco use; and
  • Visiting your dentist at a minimum once every 6 months and as problems arise.

Home Remedies to Reverse Periodontal Disease

Natural treatments for periodontal disease can be an excellent supplemental way to help ease symptoms and reverse some effects of the experienced conditions. It is always a good idea to speak with someone from the professional team at Living Wellness Dental about using some of the following home-based techniques to manage oral health conditions.

Saltwater Treatments for Dental Care

Have you ever gargled with a saltwater mixture to ease a sore throat? Salt is a natural disinfectant that can fight unhelpful bacterial build-up, soothe inflammation and manage pain. Rinsing with saline solutions can be a true benefit to gum healing.

To make a saltwater rinse, mix 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon of salt with a glass of lukewarm water and swish the solution around your mouth for 30 seconds. Be sure to avoid swallowing any salt water and only use the rinse twice a day at most. Salt water is acidic, so rinsing too frequently can damage the enamel on your teeth, causing erosion and leaving you vulnerable to cavities or tooth decay.

Aloe Vera Mouthwash

Most people associate aloe vera with post-sunburn care for its soothing properties, but it can also effectively reducing plaque and gingivitis. You don’t need to dilute aloe vera juice for mouthwash, and you can easily find high-quality, 100% pure aloe juice at your local health food store or online.

Swish the juice for 30 seconds, 2 to 3 times a day, in place of standard mouthwash to help ease the symptoms of gum disease.

Tea Tree Oil Mouthwash

Tea tree oil studies in oral health care show promising results in treating issues you may be experiencing with your gums. However, care should be taken with essential oils as high concentrations can cause allergic reactions, rashes, or burns.

Start with a drop or 2 in a glass of lukewarm water, but don’t exceed 3 drops. Swish the mixture for 30 seconds, and be sure to not swallow any mouthwash. You can use a tea tree oil solution up to 3 times daily, but talk to your dentist before trying this natural method. Interaction between certain drugs, supplements, or herbs with tea tree oil can have adverse effects.

No Replacement For a Visit to Your Dentist

Home remedies can’t replace professional dental care. If you are experiencing discomfort and suspect you have signs of developing periodontal disease as described above, call Living Wellness Dental for an exam.
