Myofunctional Therapy
Myofunctional therapy treatment is a neuromuscular re-education or re-patterning of the oral and facial muscles. The treatment includes therapeutic facial and tongue exercises and behaviour modification techniques to promote proper tongue posture. What exactly does that mean?
Simply put the tongue and face muscles play a critical role in headaches, neck tension, breathing, chewing, swallowing and poor habits (thumb sucking etc…).
Myofunctional therapy strengthens and re-patterns these muscles into their natural posture. Proper posture alleviates pain and fosters optimal health.
Orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) is a technique that may be effective in managing symptoms and providing solutions associated with:
- Mild to moderate sleep apnea
- Poor digestion
- Headaches
- Misaligned teeth
- TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction)
Myofunctional therapy is useful in preventing the ailments listed above for young children as well as rehabilitation in adults.
Living Wellness Dental has developed a stepwise program of myofunctional therapy that is easy to understand and complete. The therapy is delivered over a 3 month period rehabilitating the oral and facial muscles. The results can be simply astounding and life changing.
