How does CEREC work?
CEREC is a specialized CAD/CAM software device and milling machine that allows dentists to make same-day restorations for patients.
Dental crowns are commonly used to protect teeth that have been previously damaged by trauma or decay. Preparation requires that the dentist removes enamel from around the tooth structure. Then, impressions are made and sent to an outside dental laboratory for creation. IN the meantime, the patient is fitted for a temporary crown until the new one comes in. During a second appointment, this crown is placed.
The process for a CEREC crown is different. It eliminates the ceramist and instead creates the restorations in-house. The tooth is prepped, and digital impressions are taken of the remaining tooth structure. This information is then sent through the computer, where a dental restoration is fabricated. A block of porcelain is placed in the machine, which mills out the needed dental crown. Since impressions are done digitally, the final restoration fits precisely over the prepared tooth. Dental crowns made from the CEREC device are just as strong and natural-looking as those made in a ceramist’s laboratory.
